by consulting with an 'rbl' provider (like spamhaus, etc.)

in a nutshell the mechanism involves a dns query being sent by the mail handler to an rbl provider that, if resolved, indicates that they rbl provider has determined that the ip address in question is tainted.

some providers use dhcp pools as determining factor for tainting. (some use metrics you wouldn't believe :o) there are a whole bunch of rbl providers out there today. you can check the status of your site with a lot of them here:

http://rbls.org/?q=[yourIPaddress]

personally, i have a cron job that checks this list regularly to see who is besmirching my good name :o). it has happened 3 times so far (all fixed).
