A similar problem with kmail was reported earlier. Apparently, kmail makes
some invalid assumptions, at least by default. This isn't just a James
issue. Search for kmail, SSL, fetchmail, and you'll find multiple entries
of people switching.
Personally, I don't use SSL for SMTP or POP3. I use SSH tunnels.
