What did you type? Did you type:
setalias user1 alias1
or
setalias alias1 user1
Check the logs for any messages.

To do what you wanted above you would type:
setalias alias1 user1
Aliasing is essentially local forwarding.
> /etc/james/apps/james/var/mail/error.
Look in the "*Object*" file to see if you can spot the error message. Also
check the logs.
