With regard to building a .sar...
The James tutorial (part 2) on the IBM site by Claude Duguay has a very
workable build system that I currently use. Try it out:

If you can, switch to the 2.2.x test builds, specifically for this:

You can just dump your classes and libs in the SAR-INF/lib and
SAR-INF/classes directory after James is running without having to
repackage anything.
