It started!

        I had to change the port number
<manager-adaptor-port>8083</manager-adaptor-port> in the kernel.xml
under the conf folder.

        Now, I have two instances of James running the smtp server with
one IP address.

Yes.  I have that running on a test system at home.  Don't forget to
check all of the services, e.g., SMTP, POP3, NNTP and the remote
manager, although the exception you received should tell you which one
is causing the problem.
