The next question, which I must ask :>, is whether there is a way to reduce this. Possibly by closing an smtp session after a certain number of failed RCPT TO commands? Does this violate RFC-compliance?

I sugest you turn connection logging to DEBUG, and then you will see the whole commands issued, and get the "real" picture of what these bytes are about.
