What does netstat say? Are there a lot of connections in CLOSE_WAIT?
Does a restart fix the problem?
This has happened to us once. All connections were in CLOSE_WAIT and no new sockets could be opened. Not nice. (It was at a clients' site). We never found out what the cause was. Maybe the sockets weren't properly shutdowned before they were closed, but we haven't reproduced the problem since. (BTW: If anyone has more intimate knowledge of sockets, a more informed opinion on shutdowning sockets would be appreciated).
What kind of other exceptions do you see in the logs?
