I agree with Hes, especially on his 2nd suggestion.

I get exactly what you guys are doing, tagged the old stable branch, new
unproven stuff is on HEAD, etc., etc., but the unfortunate status quo all
open source projects I can remember digging around in the source for is that
everyone works on HEAD and only (severe?) bug fixes are done on maintenance
branches. No real active development is done on branches, so they are mostly
ignored.

Hence when I ran into the compile problems on HEAD, I looked for some
READMEs, finally found Wronski's patch, did my Message-ID mailet, and now
have HEAD+Wronski's patch deployed in production (granted a
non-mission-critical production) and working well.

A README_FIRST.txt in HEAD would have pointed me to the other branch very
quickly.
