That means Java 1.4.2_03 is too old for James.
So do you mean to say that if we do something a little bit abnormal we are likely to deadlock with DBCP also?

Mordred gets a not always deserved bad rap. There was one deadlock noticed in mordred that was fixed ages ago. A real problem was found in the JVM, where Mordred had the misfortune of exercising a bug that wasn't fixed until recently, nor was mordred the only code to exercise that bug.
Updating to a current JVM could well eliminate the problem being seen. DBCP just doesn't happen to exercise the defect in normal use.
