Well, these guys have a short summary..
http://www.qordia.com/solutions_emailarchive.html

It's various bits and pieces of SEC (rule 17a-4), NASD (rule 3110), and the
NYSD (rule 440) regs. We need to satisfy their requirements. Unfortunately
they're not really clear from a technical standpoint. Regulators want a
system in place where inbound and outbound emails are saved permanently and
unchangeably. Of course we all know that short of replacing your hard drive
platters with Fred Flintstone-esque stone tablets that's not really going to
happen. I think in the end we'll just dump all the mail to a CDR once a
month, ideally in mbox or some XML format.

This is getting slightly off-topic, but...

What are the specific "regulatory requirements" you have to comply
with? Do you have any pointers by any chance? Care to elaborate about
what "archiving" means in your case?

Usually, keeping simple copy of your messages around is not enough. In
some case, you need to store your archives on temper proof media, keep
an audit trail, provide access control and logs, etc, etc, ...

Inquisitive mind want to know! :o)

Thanks!

Cheers,

PA.
