It appears that the login is failing. At the moment I have all my
accounts working again, and one possible reason is I switched
Thunderbird from leaving emails on the server for 30 days to deleting
after download. But what I noticed even before making this change is
that the exception did not always occur - sometimes after a number of
attempts I would be able to connect and download messages.
I also suspect that in day to day use I might never have noticed the
problem. I was on vacation last month and only downloaded emails about
once a week. Accounts with less than 100 emails always worked - several
with > 300 emails gave me this problem.
