binding a server to a given IP simply will accept connections directed to that ip, not connection originated from that IP.

If you bind the server to a private IP and your server HAS a private IP then you will be able to reach the server only from the private network.

Unfortunately there are no checks on the client IP.

Just tried, but it nothing new happened: I can telnet 4555 from any host allowed to access that port via telnet in the network
configuration.
What am I missing?

Hi all.
I think the answer is "no", but asking is cheap:
is there a way configure james to grant "telnet 4555"
access only to a
specific IP address?
You are wrong.. its possible see config.xml:

   <remotemanager>
      <port>4555</port>
<!-- Uncomment this if you want to bind to a specific inetaddress
-->
      <!--
      <bind> </bind>
      -->

you uncomment the <bind> </bind> and enter the ipAddress you want james remotemanager list on.

bye
