maybe we found the problem!
I added an issue to track this:

I already created a test to prove the bug and a fix for it.
I applied the patch to our trunk for review by other committers.
thank you for discovering the bug. I would appreciate if you can confirm
that the fix works.
I just locally patched latest 2.3 branch and published a zip binary
build in my home:
http://people.apache.org/~bago/james/
The file is:
james-binary-2.3.0-r414814+james-538fix.zip
Can you test it and let us know if this fixes the problem so we can
apply the patch and publish a beta2 as soon as possible?
