Can you query an nameserver outside your network ? In linux this can be tested like:
dig @217.195.0.253 james.apache.org MX If this work you can add this nameserver or any external you want to use to james config. Anyway if and nameserver not have the corresporing entry it should query the root servers to get information where to get the entry from.
