I think the "AUTH LOGIN" line is the reply to the second connection, and the one that is giving problem is the first one. About the second connection IIRC 2.2.0 had a bug that exposed the "250-AUTH" reply also to HELO commands (bad, non rfc compliant), but:
1) I'm not sure I remember correctly
2) It seems that the problematic connection is the first, not the second.
