Thanks Norman, I'm using James 2.3.0, just downloaded a few days ago. The
UserRepository config is Jame's default:

<users-store>
      <repository name="LocalUsers"
class="org.apache.james.userrepository.UsersFileRepository">
         <destination URL="file://var/users/"/>
      </repository>
</users-store>

The only config.xml settings I've changed are servernames, dnsserver,
postmaster address, and to disable nntp server (and set nntp threads to 0).

Could the culprit be that I'm accessing the server James running on
remotely, via Windows Remote Desktop? I'm in Hawaii, the server is in
Texas.
