You say "could not get in": doesn't it accept the password or does it reject the connection? Somewhere in <jameshome>/apps/james/SAR-INF/config.xml there is a "<remotemanager enabled="true">" block. In that xml block you can read the port RemoteManager listen to, wether it is enabled or not and the username/password used to login.
