Blimey, I can't reconcile that either, not with mortal arithmetic. This would suggest that it isn't wholly related to the retries. Furthermore I would expect, but can't confirm, that lack of DNS entries for a domain would result in permanent failure at the first attempt. However I think I recall some discussions about treating non-existent domains as temporary failures in case the problem is just poor DNS resolution. Neither of those statements answer your question, but the latter may go some way to mitigate your complaints. Do the messages say "There are no DNS entries for the hostname "? Are you using a gateway, or sending to the hosts directly?
