I think you'll find the problem is quite normal and simply due to spambots checking out your connection in preparation for sending some spam. I get the same thing on my server (though thankfully not quite so many!).

Spam engines don't play right on the internet because they're busy beasts with no time for all the niceties of protocol that everyone else uses. Their sole purpose is to send spam to as many mailboxes as possible and if your machine is just too slow in responding they're off onto the next unwilling victim.

Indeed there is an anti-spam technique called 'tarpitting' [1] which relies on this behaviour to thwart spam.

It may be instructive if you try doing some reverse DNS lookups to see who was on the other end of these reset connections. I bet you find they are not well known addresses and probably many are from 'dial-up' connections.
