Any chance the instructions on the James website for using James
with Sendmail on Linux systems has been (will be) updated soon? It
appears to be no longer in sync with the current versions of the
Sendmail configuration files... Or perhaps someone could be kind
enough to send me current info on what needs to be done? Thanks...
Marc.
Never mind, I dug into it and figured out how to get James and the
new version of sendmail to work together. If anyone else wants to
know how (for SuSE), or someone wants to update the James website,
email me and I can draw up a rough outline of what I did. But I fear
it is pretty distro specific, as I am using SuSE10.3 (with sendmail
ver 8.14.1-53, and James ver 2.3.1 )
In a nutshell, sendmail now has a pretty complex macro layer that is
used to build the sendmail.cf config file. On top of that, SuSE
supplies a watered down custom config file that gets processed (each
time Yast/SuSEconfig gets executed) which augments the macro
processing layer and produces a new sendmail.cf file. Most of the
configuration required could be handled by the SuSE config file but I
did have to hack one of the macro processing files also. All in all
NOT really easy, sendmail is even more obtuse and difficult to
understand now, and I have no idea how a generic set of instructions
can be given that will apply to other distros.
Marc....
sendmail has the m4 macro layer since years: the cf file is generated
from the m4 file.
So if you can help us updating the documentation according to what you
found it would really help: you probably should check what are the
changes in the sendmail.mc file.
Thank you,
Stefano
Thanks Stefano for your reply, I am by no means an expert on sendmail
and this was my first exposure to the macro layer which I have not seen
before. Very complex and requires a great deal of time to understand....
I will be more that happy to help update the documentation, but I only
can provide a perspective from a SuSE distro. Let me know how you would
like this added and what I need to do. There is a web page on the main
website describing running James with Sendmail, should that be moved
into the Wiki pages? Let me know the procedures/process I need to follow...
Marc..
