I just sent myself a message containing the line:
>From Mail Delivery System <mailer-dae...@gmail.com> Sat Feb 07 16:09:10 2009

When I looked in my mbox, it wasn't escaped at all!

Postfix escapes these by putting a > in front, to become:
>From Mail Delivery System <mailer-dae...@gmail.com> Sat Feb 07 16:09:10 2009

I don't see any reason why mboxrd (ie, qmail) escaping wouldn't be acceptable:

Also, make sure you prepend > to already-prepended lines, otherwise a
message like this would become corrupted when the mbox is decoded:

I got a new email...
>From the president!

Here's the message:
>From barack
>Sent Today, at 2:45 PM
>Got my blackberry yet?
