I'm told GMail uses port 587 for smtp, so if you are hitting port 25 on their server directly this might be the problem.
Some ISPs also require you to use a mail gateway so outgoing mail is authenticated against one of its own user accounts. That may explain why you can mail within your own domain but not outside it. You can set a gateway in James.
