I am using James version 2.3.2 and my ISP blocks port 25 as Norman suggested
might happen.
When I change the SMTP port from 25 to 587 (as recommended by my ISP) james
begins to work as expected for both POP3 and SMTP.
However, within a day or two james silently stops listening to both POP3 and
SMTP traffic. I can connect using my email client and everything seems to
work but incoming and outgoing emails are never acted upon.
I usually find out when one of my customers complains that my mail server is
not responding.
Restoring the SMTP port to 25 and restarting the james service (on windows)
resolves the problem - although once again I can not send outgoing emails
from my client.
I am awaiting the release of james v3 to upgrade and try again.

I guess your ISP is blocking outgoing traffic to port 25. Could you
try to see if a simple telnet test work out ?
# telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25

Subject: Query on James server
Hello
I am going to recommend my client for using James as a mail server. The
requirement is simple, we do not want to use any smtp servers like gmail
for sending mail. We want to use some open source like James server. I
got a tutorial on James installation and mail sending. I could install
and set up few users in the mail server.
But, the issue that Im facing is that Im not able to send mails to any of
the external email ids. For eg: to
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. I dint find any
clear guidance for this. Can you please help me ?
Regards
