SMTP is only for sending mail, you cannot read email using SMTP.

POP3 or IMAP are for reading mail.
  - Connecting to POP3: telnet localhost 110
  - Connection to IMAP: telnet localhost 143

and then the commands must follow the protocol, e.g. POP3 protocol for POP3 and
IMAP protocol for IMAP.
HELO, Mail from, Rcpt to etc... are only for SMTP, not for POP3 neither for
IMAP.
Check the RFC for POP3 and IMAP.

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1939.txt
http://james.apache.org/server/rfclist/imap4/rfc2060.txt

Hope that helps.
Regards
Michael

how do I read the message which was sent, using telnet or something similar?

I'm assuming that it's in the INBOX for b@localhost per the log. I tried "ehlo
b@localhost" and variants, but never saw any messages.

thanks,

Thufir
