Applications IMO _are_ the manifestation of the primary problem....
the application centric project delivering model of most IT
organisations.  This is set up to create bad applications that are
hard to maintain and don't match the strategic objectives of the
company.

The reason for refering to things like EAI or JBOWS as lipstick on the
pig is that this is all they are, a thin veneer of
pseudo-respectability  trying to justify and control previous
mistakes.

Applications can be part of the solution but IMO lipstick on the pig
sums up exactly the technology driven approach.
