Thanks G,
But in my TransferServices.xml file will I put:

        <sm:component>
          <bean class="com.mypackage.myComponent">.......

Or would I put just the bean declaration like so:

          <bean class="com.mypackage.myComponent">.......

The reason I ask is because I wish to only expose the XML file and thus
have all the beans added to the context dynamically, without having to
call multiple bean refs for which I would need to know the name for and
also have to edit the context file for.

So, just additions to my TransferServices.xml file and no changes required
upon the context that it would get imported too.

Regards Rick

applicationContext.xml file error?

You should be able to use the spring import statement and then make
reference to beans.
   <import resource="file:C:/datatrans/mathmos/TransferServices.xml"/>

  <sm:container ..>
    <sm:activationSpecs>
       <ref bean="xxx" />
   </sm:activationSpecs>
  </sm:container>
