Thanks for putting up with my ignorance, Guillaume. I've got the service exposed with multiple types of endpoints now.
Servicemix definitely looks very promising. The implementation is quite clean and 'open'. If you notice, I'm sticking to the JBI way of doing things and hope to try out a lot more of servicemix's features in the near future.
