no, to use subst S: "C:\your very % problematic path!\SM" or the like in a batch file in start->startup, so you can have SM in the dir you want it to have but do not run into the troubles (yes, this is just a work around and yes, a real solution would be nicer). Sounds still weird to me :( so I don't have any further hints.
