A lot of my work is about integration with the IBM System i (aka AS/400
or iSeries). Personally, I use ServiceMix a lot because it allows you
to connect almost anything to anything, regardless of the underling
platform. There is a lot of things to consider however, but I'm afraid
your question is bit too generic to say anything useful.
Can you give me some more information about what you're trying to do?
