For the sake of learning some of the details it just might be easier to play with the binary distribution, ala Stand Alone. I've seen just about everything work in an embedded fashion, though there were a few gotchas, but I think they were related to Spring more than anything else. As far as the autodeployment stuff, you can get there programmatically.
