SSI is meant to intermingle your presentation with the *dynamic* data.
The embedded servlet just acts as a method to put in the dynamic part
(variable in your case) inside the format dicatated by the HTML content
of your .shtml file.
If you want to control all the display why not use a servlet which will
get the variable value and generate the page as you want ?
Dunno if I am missing some information from this thread ..
