Thought the participants in this list of which I have been a part for a while might be able to offer some kinda advice on a solutioning effort I am currently involved in. It's definitely non-servlet related and if u think I'll be wasting your time, do stop here. However, if u think u might be able to help, do read on : Background : My client is a service provider in the comms business. It offers its services to subscribers via packages. Each package has its own standard features and pre-requisites and these features and pre-requisites change pretty frequently. On subscription, the subscribers have the flexibility to select the desired features of the package(s). The client wants to build a system that ,among doing other processing, validates the subscriptions and subscribers' eligibility against some predefined rules and conditions without resorting to incorporating huge amount of if-then-else codes in java programs. The system should also allow changing of the rules and conditions, without having to change the logic in the programs. I suspect I probably need some kinda of engine to assist in the development. The question is : What kinda of engine? Rule-based? Workflow? Thus, I am seeking advice on the suitability of the above. Any recommendation of any engine or alternative approach is much appreciated.
