Seems to me that you are playing with the example on http authentication from
Jason Hunter's book.
I've had the same problem with that example, and found the solution by looking
at the updated code from Jason's home page:
http://www.servlets.com/jsp/examples
The problem is in the way netscape treats the url where the default port (80)
is specified.
