Have a look at URL rewriting mechanism supported by most servlet engines.
Its a "non-cookies" solution for session management with an overhead of
rewriting each and every URL you generate thru your servlet code. However,
the servlet API spec of "rewriteURL" method makes life quite easy.
Havent played with applet-servlet config, but I dont see why cookies wont
work in that case too ..
