The JavaOS is an actual operating system that is a platform for Java
applications. It is being developed by Sun with some help from IBM.
It comes in two flavours, JavaOS for Business and JavaOS for Consumers.
JavaOS for Business is the operating system used by Sun's JavaStations,
IBM's NCStations, Toshiba's net computers, etc.... Sun uses
HotJavaViews as the interface for their JavaStations. I believe that
this OS runs on top of SPARC, x86 and possibly IBM's PowerPC chips.
JavaOS for Consumers is an embedded OS (based upon the ChorusOS). It is
aimed at consumer devices with the Alcatel screenfone or the AOLanywhere
terminal. PersonalJava applications are meant for these devices.
There is a third unrelated product from Sun called the JavaPC. This is
an application that runs on top of DOS (yes, that's right DOS) and
provides a graphical environment for running Java applications (AWT and
Swing applications). It only requires a 486 PC running DOS (MS, PC or
DR). I've seen this run on 486 computers running complex applications
such as StarOffice and it was pretty fast.
