Sure you can. Servlet/RMI is one of the examples. You can go to the archive
files of this mailing list for RMI or Jason Hunter's Java Servelt book to get
the information you need.
Good luck

Subject: servlet socket connection to java application
Hi,
I'm wondering:
Can a servlet open a socket connection to a Java application on another
machine using the ip address (not the local filesystem)?
thanks for any info,
Galen
