In our project, we had to make the same choice.
We chose HTML-SERVLETS-DATABASE, because of the wide
variety of clients that have to be able to visit
our internet site.

We still have WIN3.11 clients on one side
and Netscape 2.x/Mac users on the other side,
so JAVA Applets weren't an option. We choose to
use only very basic HTML, spiced up with a little
JavaScript for the browsers that supported JavaScript.
=> So the clients could be very thin indeed!
(In case you didn't know: JAVA Applets on the client
demand more resources than HTML.)

We are no 2 weeks in production and Apache-JServ
hasn't let us down (700 users in total, an average of
30 concurrent users, 200 different visitors each day).

We had the most problems with Internet Explorer 3.0x users.
Because we also use SSL and due to a bug in MSIE,
these users aren't able to connect to the secured parts
of our site. For the rest everything works fine for
our Netscape clients on UNIX, PC and Mac. We have still
some minor problems to solve for our clients with
MSIE 4.x/5.x on PC.

A second kind of problem was the configuration of the Acrobat
Reader plugin. Part of our application deals with the
generation of PDF-files. This works fine on most browsers,
but our Helpdesk had to deal with a lot of problems with
clients that weren't configured the right way.
(The installation order: first the browser, then the Reader
is very important here! Reinstalling both solved the problem
in 90% of the cases.)

I hope this helps to make your decision.
Please don't mail for more info rightaway.
We are still working against the clock on
the second part of our application that will
be released in two weeks...

Bruno
