A question about Printwriter()

The method getWriter() of Servlet Response returns a printWriter.   Exactly where is this PrintWriter Printing to?   Does it create a file or just a buffer that displays the response in a certain form?   TIA   yan zhang   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
