I wrote a filtering system for GNU-Paperclips (the GNU servlet
engine).

This is capable of providing pluggable authentication implementations
to servlets, specified by the administrator or the servlet author.

Craig McLanahan and the Jserv people have a similar filtering thing
in the pipeline (geddit?) which I imagine could be used for
authentication.

However, these ideas have not enough maturity to be included in any
spec yet.

I wouldn't want JavaSoft to be defining this because there is not
enough consensus about how to do it.

Well, unless they want to take on lock stock and barrell what
Paperclips has done, but then I imagine Craig wouldn't like that too
much /8->
