Sigh,
I wish that I had a subscription so that I could look at the article.
I'm not supprised at all about the speed issues. JSP has a lot of overhead
compared with a CGI application. JSP servlets are not optimized for speed at
all. One reason is that there are about a billion out.println() statements
generated in the code (btw, one (of many) things I really hate about JSP).
Also, a comparison between JSP and CGI really doesn't make sense, they are
not comparible technologies at all. It is a rabbit vs. turtle race.
You don't mention what language was used for the CGI, nor do you mention
that versions of the products that he is using. Apache JServ 1.0.1 (not
released yet, no timeframe will be given) is currently about 40% faster than
1.0. So from the servlet engine performance that is a huge issue right
there.
Somehow, I really doubt that the article is well written or a fair
comparison. Especially since I never got an email from this guy about what
he was doing before he did it (he could have subscribed to one of the
mailing lists and asked first!). Why do news people continue to run tests
without bothering to ask the pro's about the software, configuration and
methodology first? It is just plain stupid!
