I need to change it as I am using the input to perform a search on the
Internet.
Which leads onto another question, does anyone know of a search engine
that returns just the URL and header, instead of all the banners and
other junk that usually comes with search engines.
I have found webferret, but I have no idea how to use this with a
servlet.

boolean space = (param.indexOf(" ") > -1)
Why do you need to change " " to "+", you might not need to.
