A singleton in a distributed environment is implemented with a namespace
(JNDI, RMI registry, etc) -- you bind your instance into
your namespace and then have all clients retrieve it from there. The access
point (URL of the namespace) is well-known and can be passed as an init
parameter, for example. This has a number of repercussions vis a vis
distribution, performance, etc. (A namespace can be replicated to local VMs,
for example). Inquire
on the appropriate mailing lists for more information.
