Just out of interest there is a similar system in GNU-Paperclips.

It is called filtering and is based on a feature that I liked in
Jigsaw.

What happens is that certain servlets can act as filters.

A filter has the power to alter the HttpServletRequest or
HttpServletResponse objects (thus a filter could set a different
outputstream than the default)

The administrator sets up when filters are to be used and against
which servlets.

I have a small number of filters at the moment, including a security
filter which implements HTTP security for servlets (rather than
letting the engine do it).

Unfortunately, this is not a standard feature of the API. It is
certainly better than conventional chaining however.
