No... In my view (and many others) the problem is that there is no
problem.

The problem you state is what getLM allows you to do... I don't see
the problem.
IMHO the objections and faults Geoff has raised do not amount to a
critique of getLM:
- getLM() provides one method for doing cache control, it is
extreemly simple and highly effective, if you need anything else you
don't use getLM and instead use hardwired code in doGet()
- the problem is the circumstances when you can't do what you want
with getLM are so few and the facilities provided for hardcoding are
good enough that no change is needed
But I am happy to applaud if Geoff or anyone else can give a reason
why getLM is derelicting it's duty.
