* Java programs are usually easy to understand by new programmers.
Shell scripts and perl programs can look like gibberish to new developers,
unless the original author takes care to format and document them precisely.
Servlets are the safest architecture for projects which use consultants or
have a long lifespan (5 years).

You seem to be rolling in an implicit criticism of
consultants/contractors here. My personal take on this is that most
management structures are very bad at managing contract work, especially
when it comes to handovers, and many contractors are not good (or not
properly motivated) to do good handovers.

Such problems with contract staff are only solved by fixing the
management. Setting loose a cadre of independent, opinionated contractors on
a project using Java instead of Perl or shell scripts is only a superficial
attempt to fix the symptoms. Conversely, a well-managed project using good
staff can be executed in languages requiring greater discipline without any
problems, so long as the language and tools are appropriate.

Time will also tell whether Servlet solutions will wear well in the
long term, better than (say) shell or Perl scripts, which are based on
language platforms which are more stable spec-wise than Java at present (and
in addition are also totally open-source).
