<table>
<tr><td>File Name:  <INPUT TYPE="file" NAME="ImageFile" VALUE=""
SIZE="39"></td></tr>
</table>
this piece of HTML can be used for inputting a filename.
It triggers a browse window ... user selects it from there

Since its an input type .. it can be read as a parameter in the doPost event
of ure servlet.
If u want to upload text as well as a file ... that's getting into multipart
response issues.
At o reilly there are classes u can download for this.

Within the servlet .. having received the filename read it in as u would a
normal file.
I have encountered no security issues doing it this way.

Sugest reading book : Java servlet programming by Jason Hunter. It deals
with this in good detail.
