Use http tunneling with URL objects. Sockets throw a security exception with
IExplorer unless they
call back to both the same host and same port from which the applet comes from. This
means going
back through the web server so http must be implemented. RMI is not supported with
IExplorer and there are
firewall issues (although the firewall problem may be avoided with RMI over http and
the lack of support
for rmi may be solved with the Sun 1.2 plug-in). CORBA is similar.
An applet tunneling back to a servlet with a URL connection is the easiest and most
widely supported
method.
