I have just completed a first version of a servlet-based shopping cart that
generates and interacts with client side html and JavaScript (a demo of this
will be up on the net soon). I found it quite nice. But as a general rule, I
suggest that you first take a serious look at the technology that is
available to you:

1 - what server technology is available;
2 - what skill set is available. Unfortunately, trying to complete a project
AND grasp a new technology is a contradiction.
