from my experience modern jvms (1.2) usually scale up to 4 CPU relatively ok.
Then your mileage may vary. Solaris Exact VM scales the best up to 16 cpus. I
was expecting more then I got from Hotspot version.
Architecturally you'd be better off having multiple web server and using
resonate or cisco director to load-balance between them or going with app.
