Hi Ian,
The major difference is that JSP's allow you to easily separate the
logic (i.e. servlets) from the presentation (i.e.. HTML usually). Truth
is that you could do everything you want using raw servlets. It has been
my experience that this solution usually forces you to embed HTML into
your java source code, unless you write your own JSP type utility. Not
using a JSP type technology makes it very difficult to edit your
dynamically generated HTML and impossible to delegate the web page
design portion of your project over to a graphic artist who specializes
in creating web pages.
basically the rule of thumb I use is this,
JSP for servlets which require a presentation aspect,
servlets for everything else.
